Aletta Jacobs (1854-1929) was the first woman in the Netherlands to attend a HBS, the first woman to become a doctor and the first woman to earn a doctorate.
For about a quarter century she headed the Vereeniging voor Vrouwenkiesrecht in the Netherlands.
Aletta Henriette Jacobs was born February 9, 1854, the daughter of progressive Jewish Abraham Jacobs and Anna de Jongh. Her father was a general practitioner in Sappemeer, Groningen, and her mother took care of the household. This was a big job, as the family consisted of 11 children.
